Golf Course Maintenance Update
Dear Sky Meadow Country Club Members,
I am thrilled and honored to take charge of the position of Superintendent at Sky Meadow Country Club. Thank you for placing your trust in me to lead your groundskeeping team and maintain the club's exceptional standards.
It has been an uphill battle to rebuild my department from scratch. We have hired 2 assistant superintendents who bring years of experience in the turfgrass industry. Dan Peletier, who has years of experience including Winchester Country Club and most recently Windham Country Club. Bryan Carney, our 2nd assistant, brings experience from Manchester Country Club and Green Meadow. As well as hiring our equipment technician, Jeff Shea, with over 5 years of experience. We now have a staff total of 8 personnel with our seasonal help starting late spring. I am extremely pleased with the status of our department and excited for what we are capable of accomplishing. Part of building this new team focus will be on fostering a positive and collaborative culture, where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best work.
Winter Progress Update
Private courses are known for their top-notch playing conditions. Here at Sky Meadow, we take pride in the finer details that contribute to this quality. The staff has taken these cold days to emphasize on details. All course accessories have been painted and refurbished for the 2024 season. This not only gives us a fresh look but protects these amenities for years to come.
Bunkers
Bunkers are a crucial element on a golf course, impacting both aesthetics and playability. They can be both beautiful hazards and strategic challenges for golfers. Our bunkers need much improvement. We have focused on edging back bunker edges that have fallen over the years, as well as added sand to the bunkers to increase playability.
Turf Education & Future Goals
Thatch buildup can be a real headache for superintendents, especially when it comes to fairways and tees. Excessive thatch acts like a sponge, holding onto water in wet weather and leading to soggy conditions. Conversely, during dry periods, thatch repels water creating unevenly hydrated fairways and tees with dry patches.
Thatch creates a spongy layer that can bury golf balls, making them difficult to play and impacting shot consistency, uneven lies, and unpredictable bounces. In the photos shown, you will see our thatch laying on tees and fairways. We will combat these issues with core aerification, verticutting, and top dressing. Increasing overall plant health and playability.
Bunker & Fairway Drainage
Our team is committed to providing the best possible golfing experience for our members. This year, a key focus will be addressing areas of wetness on the course that can sometimes impact playability. Our goal will be to undertake an in-house project to install new drainage systems in both fairways and bunkers on holes that have had significant issues in the past.
As the snow melts away and we get to tee off again, I can't wait to meet all of the friendly faces
at Sky Meadow and have a fantastic 2024 season together!
